105th birthday for Cleo Burgess held at Legion Hall

Cleo Burgess celebrates 105th with Danny Burgess and Rosetta Meister.   Cleo (Culver) Burgess has lived in this area all her life.  Her father E E Culver had a store in Urbana in 1900.  Her grandson Danny Burgess and his wife and children threw her a birthday party on Nov 21 at the Legion Hall in Vinton. She is now 105 years old. Until three years ago, Cleo lived at home alone and took care of herself, with frequent visits from her family.

Locks of Love: Hendryx donates hair in memory of her brother

Bobbie's new look after donating her long hair to Locks of Love.      For for years, Bobbie Hendryx watched as her brother Steve "Bud" Witt battled vasculitis. As she saw him bravely face his illness and death, she decided she wanted to do something to help others.       Last weekend, she did something that for most women is a routine errand, but for her was significant: She went to the beauty shop.

Frank Ohlsen Retires after 21 Year

  Please join us for an open house in his honor on Friday, November 12th, at the Benton County Farm Bureau office from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. After 21 years serving clients as an agent with Farm Bureau Financial Services, Frank W. Ohlsen of Dysart, Iowa, will retire on November 1st, 2010. During his career with the company Frank earned numerous awards and recognitions, which includes Royal Court of Honor(Farm Bureau’s most distinguished award), 3-All American trips, Master Agent, Premier Club, Honor council, many company trips, and the use of a red convertible for his Life Campaign efforts.

Vinton's Boy Scout Troop Headed West

Pawnee Pass Dan Hill, Tim H, John E, Matt L, Peyton B,  front: Andrew S, Austin B  In early August six Scouts and three leaders from Vinton's Boy Scout Troop 47 headed west for a week in the mountains.  Our first night in the mountains was at Camp Dick, a US Forest Service campground about 25 miles south of Estes Park, Colorado.  Here we did a bit of fishing, had a steak dinner over the campfire and made final preparations for the first part of the adventure: backpacking in the Roosevelt National Forest.

KIRKWOOD ANNOUNCES DEAN'S LIST HONORS

  Kirkwood Community College has released its Dean's List for the Summer 2010 semester. The honored students have achieved a 3.3 grade point average or higher after completing 12 or more credit hours with the college.
